Introduction:

Your school just finished building a gym. It was built in a new location. When it was finished, the old gym was torn down and an empty field is all that is left. Your teacher has been assigned the task of designing a new garden for this area.

Your teacher has gone to the site for the new garden and has come back wondering where to begin. All that is left is a field with sand and silt. She does not think that she can plant new flowers in this area. She needs your help to figure out what to do about the field. Why is there only sand and silt? Where is the soil? Will the soil come back? What does the teacher need to do first in order to plant flowers?

This webquest will guide you through a study of soil. You will learn the different layers of soil, where soil comes from, and how important soil is to us.
